The Salt flats and Desert lagoons of Southwestern Bolivia.

A story in three chapters.

I spent Christmas 2022 in Bolivia, taking advantage of the week I had off to visit the salt flats and desert around Uyuni. It was a bit of a last minute trip. I knew I had the week off, but hadn’t really determined what to do with the time. I was living in Lima at the time, and it was a quick flight between Lima and La Paz. Returning to Lima ended up being an adventure, but that’s a post for another time.

The salt flats were beautiful and awe-inspiring. I knew little about them, but was humbled as we drove out into them and were suddenly engulfed. There was nothing but salt in every direction. Here and there we could see another Pathfinder in the distance. As the day wound down, we were treated to one of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve witnessed.

The lagoons were full of flamingos, which I hadn’t expected. It was great to be so close to them and to see so many. If I could have changed anything about the tour it would have been to be able to spend more time at some of the lagoons, but there were so many to see and so much ground to cover.

I hope you enjoy going on this journey with me. From where you are, I imagine it’s a little less hot and dusty (and the air is a little more thick with oxygen). So settle in and click through the sections below.
